Intern travels to Colombia

Tuesday, September 3, 2013 - 15:30

Natalia Bustamante, our intern spent three weeks in the Northeast region of Colombia collecting relevant information about water management issues in mines in Antioquia, which is crossed by two of the main watersheds of this country; Cauca and Magdalena. She found that the main concerns are the lack of awareness of reusing worked water in the mining process and the load of contaminants in basins due to the small-scale mining sector.  Furthermore, she identified possible partnership with Universities, government, environmental corporations, and large-scale mines of the region in order to develop future research programs. This field trip is an important step for CWiMI to establish links to Colombia which is one of the largest producers of minerals in Latin America.
